Antique Halloween

This Autumn the Grand Canyon Bed and Breakfast is decorating an Antique Halloween. The mantles are dripping with gourds and leaves dried and preserved for their spectacular beauty. The gourds come from last year’s project and the instructions for making them are found HERE. The black board was made using masonite and black board paint cut to fit the antique frame. hung with ribbon. Once the paint is dry the board must be “seasoned” with the side of a piece of chalk. Gluten Free Fudge Chip Breakfast Muffins

Ingredients

Cooking spray

  • 1 cup applesauce

  • 1 teaspoon canola oil

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla

  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

  • 3/4 cup oat flour

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup semisweet dairy- and gluten-free chocolate chips

  • Powdered sugar

 

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Place 8 paper liners in muffin tin; coat with cooking spray.

2. Combine applesauce and next 4 ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the next 6 ingredients. Add oat mixture to applesauce mixture; stir until blended. Stir in chocolate chips.

3. Spoon batter into muffin cups. Bake for 20–22 minutes, rotating the pan a half-turn after 10 minutes. Muffins are done when tops are firm to the touch.

4. Cool slightly. Top with powdered sugar, if desired.

Prep: 10 minutes; Cook: 20 minutes.

Pumpkin-Pie Cups IngredientsPumpkin Pie Cups Gluten Free Breakfast

  • 2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk

  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar

  • 1/ cup cornstarch

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin-pie spice

 

Preparation

Whisk milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a large saucepan; bring to a boil. Boil 3 minutes, whisking constantly. Beat eggs with a whisk in a large bowl. Gradually add half the hot milk mixture to the beaten eggs. Return milk-egg mixture to pan. Cook over medium heat 3 minutes, or until thick, whisking constantly. Remove from heat; stir in pumpkin, salt, and pumpkin-pie spice. Spoon evenly into 6 (6-ounce) custard cups. Let cool, and chill for about 30 minutes, or until pudding is set.

  • Yield: 6 servings (serving size: 6 ounces)

    Breakfast Tortilla Ingredients

    • 1/2 pound Yukon gold potato (about 1 medium)

    • 1 tablespoon minced fresh chives, divided

    • 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided

    • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

    • 4 large eggs

    • 1 large egg white

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    • 1 garlic clove, minced

    • 3 tablespoons finely grated Mexican cheese

    • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

    • 1/2 cup halved chopped tomatoes

    Preparation

    1. 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

    2. 2. Place potato in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes or until tender; drain. Cool. Peel potato; thinly slice.

    3. 3. Combine 2 teaspoons chives, 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, eggs, and egg white in a bowl; stir with a whisk until blended.

    4. 4. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in an 8-inch ovenproof nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and potato slices; cook 30 seconds, gently turning potato to coat with oil. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Press potato mixture with a spatula into a solid layer in bottom of pan. Pour egg mixture over potato mixture; cook 1 minute. Gently stir egg and potato mixture. Press potato back down into bottom of pan; cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with cheese.

    5. 5. Bake at 350° for 7 minutes or until center is set. Remove from oven. Drizzle with 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil. Loosen sides of tortilla from pan; gently slide onto a serving platter. Cut into 4 wedges. Top with tomatoes and remaining 1 teaspoon chives.

    Serve breakfast with cold juice, vanilla coconut milk, and coffee or tea.

Fresh Pine Branch Christmas Decorations

Using pine branch Christmas decorations;

I love the look of natural decorations.

 

Each year we trim our trees in the fall. I use the fresh pine branches to decorate my B&B for Christmas. I love the look of natural decorations, They bring in the scent of pine in a way bottled scents could never capture. Using natural materials looks beautiful, uncluttered, and clean. Bringing a little extra life to materials that would have been mulched much sooner. I prefer to use them as much as I can before they become useful in other ways. Pine trees take on a life of their own if they are not regularly tended and trimmed. This tree is looking a little wild and requires attention to reduce dead needles and give the tree added strength for next years growth.

After the branches have been cut and before use you must remove all dead needles. Let the  branches sit in a bucket of water to soak for awhile.

After carefully trimming our trees and removing dead spots and disease our trees are ready for a safe and refreshing winter. This care will give them rest and prepare them for next years growth.
Placing them on your mantle shelf or other focal shelving is the traditional use for cut branches. This placement can bring extra character to crafted trees, villages, or nativities. They also make beautiful wreaths or garlands when shaped the same day they were cut and soaked.  When deciding where to place your pine cuttings you must choose stationary settings and surfaces that will not be disturbed throughout the month. Moving them will loosen needles and dry the branches faster since they are not being fed a continuous water supply. I
f you don’t touch them they will last for weeks! The pine branch Christmas decorations help to create the atmosphere of the season without being overwhelming for my guests.

A Green Bed and Breakfast; Eco-friendly Business

The Grand Canyon B&B is a green Bed and Breakfast.

Here are some of the eco-friendly steps we have taken to ensure we leave a smaller mark on the environment. We hope you will use any of these green ideas (where possible on your property), and share with us your ideas and suggestions to help us become even more of a “green bed and breakfast”, and to help us all become better stewards of this beautiful and fragile Earth so it can be passed on to our descendants.
1. Construction and decorating our B&B was completed in 2005 with eco-friendly materials including double pane windows, structurally insulated panels which have extremely high R values, excellent insulation (using recycled newspaper particles), and siding made from beetle-killed Ponderosa Pine.
2. All B&B and personal laundry is done in-house, with low water/high centrifuge washers. Drying time is greatly diminished. Laundry is washed and rinsed on cold, with all stains pre-treated with environmentally friendly products.
3. The laundry detergent we use is biodegradable, produced in a neighboring state, and environmentally friendly. Our cleaners are made in-house.
4. Compact fluorescent bulbs are used throughout the B&B. Burned out CFB’s are sent to a special recycling center that reclaims the mercury so no discarded bulbs are placed in landfills.

go green; eco green hotel; eco friendly business; green bed and breakfast5. Curbside recycling is used in Williams. Grand Canyon Bed and Breakfast recycles every product possible in our area: corrugated cardboard, aluminum, tin cans, paper, and plastic.
6. Purchases are made in bulk to reduce packaging waste and vehicle fuel consumption.
7. We love organic and local ingredients. Fresh fruit and vegetables are purchased from local organic farmers and natural food outlets.
8. Prior to the development of Grand Canyon Bed and Breakfast, the land had been denuded of the natural trees and shrubs. Since 2001, more than 500 trees, shrubs and perennials have been added to the property.
9. No potable water is used in our landscaping.
10. A waterfall and stream using area boulders was designed and constructed; it recycles grey water from our sinks, showers, and washing machines. This stream (along with the fountain in the backyard) has created a natural ecosystem for the property.

12. An herb garden planted next to the grey water fountain outside the kitchen provides fresh flavors for the breakfast foods. It is also frequently used by migrating flocks of birds.
13. Whenever an item no longer functions for its designed purpose, the staff creatively looks for a different purpose. For example, towels and linens no longer in service for guests are used for personal needs, become cleaning rags, donated to shelters, or a quilt may become a wall hanging.
